Background… Bob had a middle/upper-middle class upbringing. He lived in Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and the United States. He went to regular schools, 4 years at a military academy and the University of Arizona... going through several different colleges because he simply didn’t know what he wanted to major in. In fact, although he had tons of credits he majored in romance language literature but never actually graduated - he didn’t agree with the curriculum. But he actually taught at the U of A and was a trainer for the Peace Corps.
Early work… He did always work during Summers, starting at the age of 10 - truck driver assistant, assistant chemist, bag boy at the airport, airlines office boy (later in reservations), assistant construction engineer... and he worked while in college in Tucson - from pizza cook to pool hall manager. Ah, and he was a cold galley cook and the officers’ cabin boy and steward on a freighter.
Adult work… When he returned to São Paulo after college he started working in radio in advertising agencies (mostly Almap, J.Ribeiro Mihanovich and Young & Rubicam - with a 2-year sabbatical at Leo Burnett), in creative, radio and TV production, strategic planning, consumer insights, account management, including broad spectrum/multi-discipline strategic planning. In his 25 years working for Y&R, he went from account director up to general manager in Brazil, managing director in Venezuela and a regional director for Latin America.
Marketing & Passion… In 1996 Bob opened Marketing & Passion and he has worked with clients throughout Latin America, Caribbean and Europe (Western, Central and Eastern).
Family… He and his wife, Cly - a retired ballerina (the spirit never retires...) - live in Doral, Florida. They have 2 sons: Bob (Jr) who is a senior art director and lives in São Paulo with his son, Mark; Kleever who is a musician, a restauranteur and raises horses, lives in Botucatu (Brazil) with his wife Jô and their daughter Maria João.
Whew… all of this just to say that Bob is a sensitive, curious, eclectic, seasoned man who works with passion.
So what’s with the train?… a passion inherited from his grandfather, a journalist, who for many years traveled by train and wrote about them and the railroad. And for several seasons he also traveled all over the US with the Ringling Bros • Barnum & Bailey circus on their train. Years later the folks at L&N Railroad gave him a caboose - he parked it in his back yard and he wrote his columns there. When Bob would visit him and his grandmother he would stay in the caboose.
One day Bob hopes to have his office in his own caboose.
